THE THEATRES WITHIN THE “CIRCUITO DEL MITO”The theatres housing the “Circuito del Mito” events exude history as true icons of Sicily.
Among them, in the regional capital, the Politeama, in the namesake square, established in 1867 by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda as a “people’s theatre”, because of its strong social value. Its distinctive feature is the huge horseshoe-shaped hall. Nowadays, this theatre is the home of the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra (Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana).
The Sangiorgi Theatre, opened in 1900 in via Antonino di Sangiuliano in Catania, is another privileged stage where to attend the musical rendezvous. Born as an open-air space, it became a closed space a few years later, becoming one of the most importat theatres in which companies from all over Italy perform.
Among the other prestigious stages present in the “Circuito del Mito”, there’s Cefalù’s town theatre, named after local violinist Salvatore Cicero, which became a world-famous film set when Tornatore shot there some scenes of his “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso”.
