Experienced critics have described him as «the most astonishing double bass player in the world» and even as «the Paganini of double bass». He prefers introducing himself by using simply his name and surname: Renaud Garcia-Fons. The French artist will be the protagonist of three concerts in Sicily: on December 7 at the “Cicero” town theatre on via Spinuzza, in Cefalù, on December 8 at the “San Vito” auditorium in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and on December 9 at the “Centro Zo di culture contemporanee”, in Catania, via Asia 6.
Born in 1962, Garcia Fons is a musician who clearly uses his unquestionable virtuosity not as a mere show, but by putting it to use in a musical expression and a coherent speech, though rich in several geographical and cultural origins.
The sponsor of this event is the Sicilian Region, through the Tourism and Sport Departement.
THE THEATRES WITHIN THE “CIRCUITO DEL MITO”
The theatres housing the “Circuito del Mito” events exude history as true icons of Sicily.
Among them, in the regional capital, the Politeama, in the namesake square, established in 1867 by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda as a “people’s theatre”, because of its strong social value. Its distinctive feature is the huge horseshoe-shaped hall. Nowadays, this theatre is the home of the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra (Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana).
The Sangiorgi Theatre, opened in 1900 in via Antonino di Sangiuliano in Catania, is another privileged stage where to attend the musical rendezvous. Born as an open-air space, it became a closed space a few years later, becoming one of the most importat theatres in which companies from all over Italy perform.
Among the other prestigious stages present in the “Circuito del Mito”, there’s Cefalù’s town theatre, named after local violinist Salvatore Cicero, which became a world-famous film set when Tornatore shot there some scenes of his “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso”.
